On 3 and 4 August, students in Years 3 to 6 of the Primary School (Primaria, Educación Básica Integrada) attended the Teatro del Notariado to watch a performance of King Arthur and the Black Knight by The Company Educational Drama. The activity was part of an initiative to deepen students’ understanding of English, designed to link language skills with artistic experience and ethical reflection.

The educational outing was integrated into a pedagogical sequence that began in the classroom with an analysis of the play, a focus on vocabulary and an exploration of the characters and the songs to be performed. This preparation enabled students to approach the performance with a solid foundation in comprehension, which turned their visit to the theatre into an active exercise in cultural engagement.

The theatrical experience places language learning within a meaningful context. By watching a play performed entirely in English, students practised attentive listening and the interpretation of expressive nuances, discovering firsthand how language becomes a natural vehicle for communication and cultural enjoyment.

The play —an adaptation by the playwright Juan Luis Granato based on the Arthurian legend— offered a reflective take on leadership and human behaviour. In this version, the plot shifts the focus away from the figure of the invincible hero to explore vulnerability, the need to listen, and the value of humility.

Set against a backdrop of physical confrontation and the desire for domination, the story suggests that true strength lies in compassion, loyalty and respect for others. The central premise of the story —“Magic listens to hearts more than swords”— served as a conceptual framework that stimulated subsequent discussion in the classrooms, where groups analysed the meaning of justice and the peaceful resolution of differences.

This theatrical experience reaffirms Instituto Crandon’s commitment to an education that combines academic rigour with artistic sensitivity.
