Poetry as a linguistic experience

On Thursday, September 3, and Friday, September 4, 3rd Grade classes (Primaria, Educación Básica Integrada) welcomed families for their English Open Classes. The proposal brought together rhyme, drama, mime, and music in a pedagogical synthesis that showcased part of the daily learning process taking place in the classroom.

Every open class gives new meaning to the institutional premise of opening doors and portals: an invitation for the community to step into the educational process and witness the construction of knowledge from within. On this occasion, 3rd Grade English teachers created a shared space where English came alive through play, oral expression, and literary sensitivity.

The main purpose of the gathering was to share a snapshot of everyday classroom work with families, placing special emphasis on introducing poetry in primary education.

Poetry: from formal analysis to stage experience

Prior to the open class, the groundwork took place in the classroom, where teachers guided students in exploring poetry as a literary genre and identifying its core elements: the role of the title, the structure of lines and verses, the rhythmic cadence of rhyme and the concept of stanza.

Building on those foundational concepts, the open class was designed as an interactive game where students had to discover which poem they were about to represent. To do so, they listened closely to clue lines recited by the teacher. Once the riddle was solved, a group stepped forward to perform The Engineer, one of the poems from their coursebook.

Phonetic exploration continued with tongue twisters. Working with word cards, students practiced speech articulation and speed across rhythmic sound patterns. The activity combined humor with precision in English pronunciation.

Later, pictures illustrating everyday household chores served as a thematic prompt to perform the poem My Robot’s Misbehaving, before wrapping up the presentation to the rhythm of the song Rocking Robot.

In 3rd Grade, poetry plays a vital role in bilingual development: it trains the ear to catch the nuances of English while providing tools to explore the language with confidence. By connecting the spoken word with song and drama, students assimilate complex language structures naturally, without relying on word-for-word translation. By opening its doors to families, Crandon reaffirms an educational approach where bilingual learning is built on artistic exploration, empathy, and expressive confidence in every student.
