On September 8 and 9, 1st Grade classes (Educación Básica Integrada, Primaria) opened their doors of the Multipurpose Room to share their English Open Classes with their families. Building on the enthusiasm sparked by the Robin Hood play seen in August, the proposal brought together poetry, drama, songs, and games that showcased how students make the language their own in daily classroom work.

The initiative originated in Graff Hall, where the theater company The Company staged the play The Adventures of Robin Hood. The performance remained alive in daily classwork: the English teaching team used the medieval tale as a springboard to delve into vocabulary, pronunciation, and a shared reflection on justice and solidarity.

With that groundwork laid in the classroom, teachers designed an interactive gathering where students took center stage before their families, turning their learning into a vibrant, shared experience.

Poetry, drama, and shared play

The session opened with a performance of the poem Everybody Has a Name, recited with expression and poise by each group. Through its lines —celebrating the richness of differences and the affirmation of personal identity—, the children demonstrated fluency in pronunciation and rhythmic cadence.

After working in small groups, they performed dialogues from the medieval legend, bringing Robin Hood, the Sheriff, Marian, and Bertha to life. Their command of newly acquired vocabulary shone through a themed song about fruits, a pedagogical tool that reinforced English structures through musical rhythm.

The gathering also featured an engaging moment of family interaction through a scavenger hunt: teams had to help the characters find items that had been misplaced around the room. 

The musical repertoire continued with a song about vegetables, some of which had been tucked away inside Bertha’s basket.

Following the dynamic search, the gathering closed with a final circle where the children struck Robin Hood’s archery pose and everybody sang the character’s theme song with great spirit. 

Toward the end of the gathering, a visual surprise rounded off the activity: a themed photo mural with cutout faces, painted by Mtra. Karina Moner Longo, which offered the ideal backdrop for a playful souvenir photo.

Primary Open Classes give new meaning to the institutional premise of opening doors to families: a space where bilingual learning goes beyond the textbook and is consolidated through art, play, and shared expressive confidence.
