On September 10 and 11, the five 6th Grade English classes (Primaria, Educación Básica Integrada) opened their classroom doors to share with families how they are preparing for the KET, PET, and Trinity international exams. The proposal, designed by the English teaching team, combined engaging activities with academic strategies to showcase the students’ command of the language and enjoy the learning process together.

Preparing for these certifications—Cambridge and Trinity College London exams—requires careful and sustained training. At Instituto Crandon, this process goes beyond merely practicing test formats; it fosters the development of real communicative skills, effective time management, and personal confidence in the face of academic challenges.

To exhibit this intensive daily work, teachers offered families a structured overview of the various exam tasks and methodological approaches that students regularly practise in the classroom.

Hobbies: vocabulary in action

The gathering began with an interactive activity where families, seated at different tables, pieced together jigsaw puzzles featuring photographs of the teachers. The images showed the educators engaging in their favorite leisure activities.

The choice of this topic was no coincidence: hobbies and entertainment play a central role in international exams. Approaching the language through personal interests shifts the focus toward practical experience, enabling the incorporation of specific and procedural vocabulary. Through this approach, the children naturally internalize technical terms, action verbs, and instructional sequences that enrich their vocabulary.

Comprehension and communication strategies

Following this, the gathering moved on to the specific skill areas assessed by the tests. The reading comprehension segment was addressed through an exercise that showed families the method for approaching a text, identifying different text types, and applying various strategies to unravel the meaning of the written word.

Afterward, the focus shifted to a listening comprehension exercise, reviewing the essential strategies needed to grasp key information —a critical aspect for successfully navigating the listening section of the exams—. Finally, the activity concluded with a specific speaking practice, a fundamental pillar for demonstrating poise, pronunciation, and oral fluency.

Shared confidence

The 6th Grade Open Classes reaffirm the commitment to involving families in the educational journey. Showcasing the scaffolding behind the preparation for the KET, PET, and Trinity exams highlights that bilingualism is a living tool. Beyond the goal of certification, these gatherings consolidate each student’s expressive confidence and transform the challenge of an international assessment into a shared and enjoyable growth experience.
